ArchaeoInfo needs Microsoft Access 2003 to run. If you do not have a full version of this program on your computer you cannot use ArchaeoInfo. INSTALLING ARCHAEOINFO If Archaeoinfo is already installed on your computer you must uninstall it using the "add or remove programs" facility in the Windows control panel before you can reinstall. After downloading move the content of ArchaeoInfo.Zip to a temporary library and run Setup.exe. This will install Archaeoinfo on your computer. By default the program file ArchaeoInfo.mdb is placed in a sub library to the Library C:\Program Files (in Danish installations the name of the library is Programmer) named ArchaeoInfo. Together with this executable file a number of other files are placed in the same library. These files must remain in the same library as ArchaeoInfo.mdb. One of the files is the database file Institution.mdb. This file contain, all the archaeological institutions in Denmark. You can edit this file, and include your own institution (and indeed delete all the Danish Institutions if you wish). NB! NB! NB! *********************************************************************************** Since early summer 2006 a so far unsolved error has occured to new installations probably associated with security updates of Microsoft Windows. The following applies to new installations only. If you are reinstalling ArchaeoInfo you should not be concerned. When you try to create a new database or open an existing one you will recieve an error message and nothing will happen. The reason is that Archaeoinfo cannot find a library containing the standard file handling routines. The library is installed by the installation procedure, but seemingly the registration fails. The name of the library is comdlg32.ocx, and it is located in C:\program files\ArchaeoInfo. A work around for this problem (the only one I have been able to establish) is as follows: 1) When ArchaeoInfo is running press Alt-F11. This should bring up the Visual Basic for Aplication (VBA) window. 2) Choose Tools on the menu bar in this window followed by the sub menu References. 3) In the form that appears you will find a number of checked entries. One of them reads Microsoft Common Dialog Control 6.0 (SP3) 4) If you click on this (be careful not to remove the check mark) you will see (bottom of the form) that its location is in C:\Program files\ArchaeoInfo, where indeed it can be found, but Windows is not aware. 5) To make Windows aware you: Click on the button Browse; Find the library C:\Program files\ArchaeoInfo; Choose file type ActiveX controls (*.ocx); Choose comdlg32.ocx; Click Open. 6) Close the VBA window and ArchaeoInfo and then reopen ArchaeoInfo. It should now work properly. ***************************************************************************************************** UPDATING ARCHAEOINFO The straight and safe but also cumbersome way to update ArchaeoInfo with a new version/build is to uninstall the existing program and the reinstall with the new version/build. If you are uncertain use this method (Note that you should download the installation file and not the update file). A quick way to update is to download the update file, which is simply a ziped ArchaeoInfo.Mdb file. You can copy the ArchaeoInfo.Mdb directly to C.\program files\Archaeoinfo overwriting the existing ArchaeoInfo.mdb, and the update is complete. Warning: If your existing ArchaeoInfo is a compiled version (extension .mde) this method will not work properly, as your short cuts will keep refering to the old .mde file and not the new .mdb file. If you do not know how to handle these things manually, you should uninstall the old version/build followed by a new installation. ********************************************************************************************************** NOTE! As of February 2006 ArchaeoInfo is no longer distrbuted in a compiled version (extension .mde), but as a normal Access database (extension .mdb), those who have installed ArchaeoInfo prior to February 2006 should delete Archaeoinfo.mde from the installation library, as it will not be deleted automatically by the installation routine. NOTE! As of November 2006 Archaeoinfo is no longer distributed with a runtime module, which means that you must have Access 2003 installed on your computer to run ArchaeoInfo. The reason for this is that some of the many safety changes in Windows have created problems with the installation procedure. There is no remedy for these problems with the run time version. Only if you have a full version of Access 2003 can they be handled as described elsewhere in this paper. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO DANISH USERS When installed ArchaeoInfo appears with an English interface. To change to the Danish interface, you should choose Customisation in the menu and subsequently Setup. In the form that appears you can then choose “dansk” from the drop down box Language.
